Choose the Right Screws for Your Wooden Deck
Choose the right screw length
When choosing screws, the first thing you need to figure out is what length they should be. The thickness of the decking board determines which screw length should be used. The width of the decking board determines the number of screws needed per square metre, and using that measurement, you can calculate how many screws you will need for your wooden deck.
Use the right decking screw in the right environment
The type of screw that should be used for your decking build depends on several different factors, such as weather, geographical location, the size of the deck, and the wood type. For large wooden decks, a sturdier screw is recommended, and when using a hard, exotic wood, it is important to pre-drill and countersink the screw to prevent screw breakage. If the screw rusts, or if the timber or structure moves more than the steel can handle, the screw may break, which is usually due to the use of screws with the wrong dimensions or the wrong surface finish.

Underlying construction
When building a wooden deck, it is important that the underlying structure is stable, has the right dimensions, and is built correctly. If in doubt, contact a qualified craftsman, an expert in the field, or a supplier of building materials.
