Wildlife cameras
At Biltema we have a large range of equipment for hunters, including game cameras. A wildlife camera is a type of camera that automatically takes photos or videos when it detects movement, such as when an animal walks past the camera.
You can use a game camera to see the movements of animals where the camera is set up. Explore our range of hunting equipment on this page.
What is a wildlife camera?
A game camera, also known as a trail camera or remote camera, is specially designed to monitor and record the movements of wild animals. The camera is particularly useful for hunters, naturalists, or wildlife enthusiasts who want to observe and study the animals’ behaviour. NOTE! It is important to follow applicable legislation for camera surveillance in the country where the product is used.
How a wildlife camera works
But how does a game camera work? It is typically equipped with a motion sensor that activates the camera when it detects movement within its field of view. The sensor can reach up to 30 metres on some models. When the sensor is activated, the camera either takes a photo or starts recording video – it all depends on the settings and camera model.
Most cameras are equipped with infrared light, and when they need to shoot in the dark, the camera turns on the infrared light and emits it at a wavelength that makes the light completely invisible to the human eye.
A hunting camera is designed to be both rugged and weatherproof, which means it can work effectively in multiple environments and weather conditions. You can mount it to a tree or the like, and then you leave it for hours, days, weeks, or maybe even months at a time – depending on the purpose. And most kinds have camouflage patterning, which makes them slightly easier to conceal in nature.
All cameras have an SD card for storage, and once you have the videos or images you need, you can insert the SD card into your computer to easily browse the images and videos.
NOTE! SD cards are not included with our game cameras.
3 ways you can use your game camera
You can use a game camera for a variety of purposes, and we’ll go through a few uses below.
Study wildlife
All game cameras are first and foremost a good tool for studying animals. The camera can give you unique insight into the natural behaviour that you would not otherwise have opportunity to observe. For example, you can get a peek into how many animals interact with each other, what they eat, and how they behave – either during the day or night.
Basically, you can gain increased understanding of the different species and the number of animals that move around in a particular area, which can lead to increased understanding of how you opt to hunt in the area. The camera can also be used if you are just curious about the wildlife in your garden.
Find out where your game is
A game camera or trail camera is an indispensable tool for hunters. It can be a great help in locating game. By placing it in strategic locations, you can easily get an overview of where the game is moving and when they are most active. It can help you plan your hunt more efficiently and increase your overall chances of success.
Take a closer look at the animals in your garden
But a game camera isn’t just for monitoring the game when you go hunting. You can also use the camera at home in the garden to monitor many other animals. You can use it to keep an eye on what is really happening in your garden, either when you are not around or when you are sleeping. Remember to comply with the regulations on clear signage when putting up a camera in nature. Many people are surprised at how much wildlife there actually is in their gardens, and it can therefore be a fun experience for the whole family.
Do not use your game camera illegally
Before setting up a camera here in Denmark, you must ensure that both the set-up and location comply with the CCTV surveillance law, so that you do not use the game camera illegally.
You can read much more about the CCTV Surveillance Act at the Danish Data Protection Agency. Remember to familiarise yourself with the legislation before setting up your game camera.
Also use your trail camera for security
A trail camera is ideal for hunting, but more and more people are realising that it can also be used for more than observing wildlife or planning a hunt. You can also use it as an effective security camera. It can be very suitable if you need to monitor a particular area, such as your yard, driveway, shed, or cottage. NOTE! As mentioned before, remember to check applicable legislation before setting up the camera at home to ensure compliance.
The wildlife camera’s motion sensor detects movement within the camera’s field of view – and this does not only apply to animals. As soon as the camera detects movement, it starts recording, so you can easily and quickly get an overview of what is really happening in the area you want to monitor when you are not around.
Things to keep in mind when choosing a trail camera
There are many different game cameras, and there are several factors to consider when determining which game camera is best for you. Read some of the most important factors below.
- Reaction time: One of the most important properties when choosing a game camera is its reaction time. This is the time it takes for the camera to respond when the motion sensor is activated. A quick reaction time means the camera can capture the animal in action before it leaves the field of view.
- Camera settings: A trail camera typically comes with different setting options for resolution, frame rate, and exposure, but how easy is it to set up the camera? Some types of cameras come with a small display where you can see how the settings work, while others don’t. Therefore, you should decide what you need before buying.
- Image quality: The image quality of the wildlife camera is another important factor. A high resolution in megapixels means better image quality. It is therefore also important to think about your needs, depending on what you are going to photograph.
- Battery life: Battery life determines how long you can leave your game camera without having to replace the batteries. Some cameras use regular AA batteries, while others use rechargeable batteries, and it’s important to research your camera’s battery life before choosing a model.
- Memory card: How much memory do you need for your trail camera? The memory card size determines how many photos and videos your camera can store. If you plan to leave your camera out for a long time, or if you set it to take a lot of photos or long videos, you’ll need a larger memory card. Remember to buy a memory card if you are considering one of the game cameras from Biltema.
- Mounting options: Last but not least, you should also consider how and where you want to mount your game camera. Some cameras come with straps or brackets so you can attach them to trees or posts, while others require extra equipment before you can mount them.
So, there are several different factors you need to consider before investing in a game camera, and if you keep what we have mentioned in mind, then you will be better equipped to choose the right camera for your needs.
