When mineral oil and full synthetic oil are mixed, a semi-synthetic motor oil is created, which in turn affects the properties of the full synthetic oil.
Mineral oil is refined in several stages to remove natural impurities and unwanted hydrocarbons. After the refining process, however, the mineral oil still contains some substances that affect the oil’s lubricating properties, so additives must therefore be added. The effect of the additives decreases over time, resulting in mineral oil having a shorter service life and needing to be replaced more frequently than synthetic oils.
What is the difference between mineral oils and synthetic oils?
The major difference between conventional mineral oils and synthetic oils is that synthetic oils are produced through more advanced refining processes where they are modified at the molecular level, making them cleaner and of a higher quality.
Biltema’s mineral oils
In our range you will find mineral oils such as API and ACEA classifications that suit many cars from the ’60s to the ’80s. You will also find mineral oils that are ideal for motorcycles and some vintage vehicles, as well as mineral oil-based diesel motor oil for heavy vehicles.
Frequently asked questions about mineral oils
Why use mineral oil?
Mineral oil has a lower viscosity and is therefore a good option for older engines as it reduces the risk of leakage.
Can different mineral oils be mixed?
Modern mineral oils, full and semi-synthetic oils can be mixed with each other since they are all produced from crude oil. The oils need to have the same specifications and viscosity in order for them to be mixed.
But be aware that each type of oil has its own additive that gives it specific properties, and these properties can change when mixed. Therefore, it is always preferable to do an oil service and ask your workshop which motor oil was used during the oil change.
Before buying motor oil, you should check your vehicle’s manufacturer recommendations. This information can be found in the car’s physical or digital manual. Among other things, the manual will state the oil type and viscosity grade you should use and which specifications the oil should conform to. If you are unsure, we advise you to talk to your workshop or a member of staff in our stores.
