What is polyester?
Polyester is a type of resin that is often used as a matrix material in fibreglass-reinforced plastic products. This resin helps to bind the fibreglass strands together, giving the structure strength and durability.
Polyester resins are popular due to their good mechanical properties and resistance to corrosion, making them ideal for many applications, including boat hulls, car parts, water tanks, and building materials. In addition, polyester is relatively cheap compared to epoxy, for example.
Find polyester for fibreglass at Biltema
Biltema offers a good range for your needs. No matter if you are taking on a small or large project, Biltema has the right amount of polyester. We offer everything from 0.5 kg tubs to as much as 10 kg for larger tasks.
We also have hardeners, which are necessary for the polyester or gelcoat to cure correctly. If you are looking for cloths that can be used to remove dust and sanding residue before painting, you will also find them at Biltema.
How to use polyester on a damaged area
Biltema’s polyester adheres well to wood, metal, concrete and other materials and is vibration-resistant. Polyester should be mixed with 2% hardener and solidifies in about 30 minutes at room temperature if mixed correctly. Please note that hardeners are sold separately.
To apply polyester to minor or major damage, start by thoroughly cleaning the area of dirt, oil, and loose particles. Sand the damaged area lightly to ensure good adhesion. Apply your polyester blend to the area using a brush or spatula, making sure to cover the entire area evenly. Then place a fibreglass mat on top and dab with the brush so that the mat makes good contact with the polyester. If necessary, apply several layers of fibreglass mats on top and apply extra polyester.
Should I choose polyester or epoxy?
When it comes to choosing between polyester and epoxy for repairs or construction, there are some significant differences to consider. Polyester resin is generally less expensive and cures faster than epoxy, which can be beneficial in projects restricted by time and budget. It is also easy to work with and has good mechanical properties as well as resistance to corrosion, making it ideal for many applications, such as boat hulls and car parts.
Epoxy, on the other hand, is known for its superior strength and durability. It bonds better to a wide range of materials, including wood, metal, and concrete, and is more resistant to moisture and chemicals than polyester. This makes epoxy a better choice for projects that require higher strength and a longer service life, such as structures that will be exposed to harsher environments or heavier loads.
The choice between polyester and epoxy thus depends on the specific requirements of the project. Polyester is a good choice for quick, budget-friendly repairs, while epoxy is better suited for projects that require maximum strength, durability, and chemical resistance. By assessing these factors, you can make the best choice for your project.
