What is alkyd paint?
Alkyd paint is oil-based, which gives it long-lasting durability and makes it suitable for areas subjected to heavy wear and tear, such as outdoor areas that are exposed to the elements. The paint is known for giving surfaces a hard, glossy and highly water-repellent finish. This type of paint has excellent adhesion to challenging surfaces and allows for easier application compared to emulsion paints.
However, it should be noted that the solvent turpentine, which is used in and together with alkyd paints, can be harmful if inhaled over long periods of time. Before use, read the data sheet of the desired product to find out what protective equipment is needed.
Alkyd paint is popular on boats
If you want to paint a boat above the waterline, alkyd paint is an excellent and very popular choice with many boat owners. The reason is simple. The end result you get when using the paint makes alkyd paint highly suitable for marine environments. The paint produces a hard surface, as well as a completely glossy and water-repellent surface, which is perfect for wet environments. Then you can safely sail off at sea in a beautiful and shiny alkyd-painted sailboat.
